Characteristic
It is usually sold as translucent pellets, which will become tacky in air because KOH is hygroscopic. Corrosive to metals and tissue.

Applications:
Used in chemical manufacturing, petroleum refining, cleaning compounds. Potassium Hydroxide is used in the cosmetic and skin care industry as a pH adjuster or bufferer in a wide variety of formulas. Potassium hydroxide is often found as an additive in commercially processed foods, and as a rinse or chemical peel for fruits and vegetables. It is added to processed foods as a stabilizer to prolong shelf-life, and as a thickener. The largest single use is in the production of potassium carbonate, which is used primarily in the manufacture of specialty glasses, including television tubes. Potassium hydroxide is used in the production of agricultural-grade fertilizers. These fertilizers can be used as a source of potassium (one of three major plant foods) for crops that are sensitive to chloride ions.
